Mayor Jereleen Holliman-Miller, Great Grand Niece of Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune, invites you to the 2018 Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Legacy Festival, May 18th through 20th. We will be honoring and celebrating the life and legacy of her Aunt, Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune, in her birthplace, Mayesville, SC.

The Town of Mayesville is hosting the 2018 Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Legacy Festival; with the theme, once again, of “Empowering Communities Through Health, History, Art, STEM Education, Music and Sports”. It’s going to be a fun filled and educational weekend with all day rides, games, crafts, activities, music and food.

For the past five years and continuing this year, our Sponsorship Chairman for the Legacy Festival is Xavier “X-Man” McDaniel, a retired professional NBA basketball player who, at 6 ft 7 in, played both small forward and power forward.

Dr. Bethune was an advisor to four U.S. Presidents, a national champion of human rights, as well as the founder of Bethune-Cookman College (at a time when there were only a few female presidents of Colleges or Universities around the world). She is not solely an African-American History Icon but an American History Icon.

Grand Marshall of the Legacy Parade is Bishop Samuel Green, Sr of the 7th District African Methodist Episcopal Church.  Another featured event is the Unveiling of the Portrait of Congressman James “Jim” Clyburn by the World Famous Painter, Simmie Knox (

Sports figures participating in the Legacy Festival include: NFL Legends, Quarterback Michael Vick and Center Jamie Dukes; NBA Legends Dale Davis, Xavier “X-Man” McDaniel; World Heavyweight Boxing Champion James “Bonecrusher” Smith; Jacquelyn Frazier-Lyde (Daughter of World Boxing Heavyweight Champion Smokin’ Joe Frazier), and Retired Harlem Globetrotters Bobby “Zorro” Hunter and Larry “Gator” Rivers. Dr. Joi C. Spraggins will highlight STEM Education. NFL Legend Jamie Dukes presents a workshop on “Prevention step therapy to significantly impact the opioid and concussion epidemic” (
